Make America Honest…
What’s that supposed to mean? Are you implying that America isn’t honest about something? How dare you!
Take a deep breath and hear me out. Can we talk? I mean, talk frankly and honestly about race and racism in America.
It doesn’t require an advanced degree in the social sciences to see that we are divided as a nation. Divided by race, gender, politics… and much more. Fear is a commodity and many Americans are buying and selling it daily to push agendas aimed at keeping us angry and fearful. There are powerful forces working to keep us divided.
A journey to learn about racial injustice can be overwhelming, heart-breaking and exhausting… and as a white woman, even typing that makes me feel uncomfortable and embarrassed to say.
But learning is a life-long process and while there is air in my lungs, I want to be curious and willing to learn from different people and experiences. This website on the vast space that is the world wide web, is my humble attempt to process everything that I’m learning.
I’m fully aware that I have and will continue to get things wrong. But to be frank, I’m more worried about remaining silent. And I want to challenge us all to get comfortable with being uncomfortable, because when lives are at stake, my comfort doesn’t really count for much anyway.
“Anything that’s human is mentionable, and anything that is mentionable can be more manageable. When we can talk about our feelings, they become less overwhelming, less upsetting, and less scary. The people we trust with that important talk can help us know that we are not alone.” – Mr. Rogers
